The ''promise'' in La Promesa refers to a promise that company patriarch Jose "Pepin" Garcia made to his family before leaving his native country, Cuba, for Nicaragua. ''La Promesa, 'The Promise,' is referring to something very personal between Pepin and his family,'' Montenegro said. ''In 2001 when he left Cuba for the first time, completely alone, he made a promise to the rest of the family, who stayed in Cuba.''
Pepin's promise was to prove himself, to make something of himself in the cigar industry outside of Cuba, and to honor his family and tobacco heritage. According to My Father, the company as it stands today -with its farms in Nicaragua and factories in both Nicaragua and Miami- is the fulfillment of that promise.
''For us, as immigrants, this is very important, because when one leaves his hometown, a lot of dreams, hopes and promises travel with oneself, especially when the rest of the family isn't doing that trip with you,'' Montenegro said.
La Promesa is covered in a dark, Ecuador Habano rosado oscuro wrapper, with binder and filler tobaccos from the Garcia family farms in Nicaragua.
